the ruby show

While this blog is named for her, and has her picture smeared across it, it's obviously not all about her.

But in her little mind, EVERYTHING is about her.

A couple of weeks ago, she entered my office wearing nothing but her boots and a smile and threw out her arms and announced, "Welcome to the Ruby Show!"

She still adores all things pretty, princess-y, and pink. Recently I heard her say this: "*Gasp*! It's twelve o'clock. I must go!" I came home the other night and found her in this getup... pig pajamas, a red tutu, butterfly wings, and a big fat flower on her headband.

The love of shoes also continues. Shoes are not only for feet, but hands too (pretending she's a puppy or kitty....?) - and Shoes Must Be Worn at All Times. It doesn't matter if they're your own shoes.

Just yesterday she told me she was a doctor. "What do doctors do?" I asked her. "I dunno. Eat."

She knows all of her letters (uppercase and lowercase) - and can spell a few words. She can even write most of the letters. She also identifies numbers and can to twenty, sometimes skipping 5. Not sure why 5 is shunned, but she seems to do it on purpose. She also knows her colors and shapes. She spotted a stop sign the other day and she said - "look! A red octagon!" She's known colors for as long as she could talk - which was well before she was two.

She is the goofiest kid. She asks us to 'read books with me' - but her version is not to sit and listen while you read, instead bring out a book for each of us and we read our own. Usually she likes to actually narrate her own book while you are reading aloud.

Last week we took her to see Sesame Street Live. She was so very excited, and when Big Bird walked out on stage, she stood up, waved her hands and yelled "Hi, Big Bird! Up here! Big Bird, hi!" Terrible, but I didn't take a single picture there.

Recently there was an opera on TPT. She was mesmerized. She would watch intently, then give it a whirl herself. Check out the vibrato. I'd even bet she's singing in Italian :) Oh, and she's not vain at ALL... she is looking at herself in a mirror.

We've been working on the potty training. For a while we tried it on the Big potty. Then we got a little potty for the floor. She picked it out and it's been much more promising. But when we moved to the princess panties, not so great. Apparently she doesn't care if she tinkles on Ariel or poops on Cinderella.

We've been talking about the baby. But I'm pretty sure she doesn't quite get it. I bought a couple of books and hope they will be helpful. She definitely has opinions on what his name should be.

Today she 'made her own sandwich' (pronounced sammich in Ruby-ese). This means she pulled a chair up to the counter, broke into the bread and smooshed two pieces together and ate it. I guess she is proving she is self sufficient. Either that or she doesn't get fed enough. I like to think it's the first and that we could just skip finding a sitter and go out.

  1. Sounds like you have a pretty bright one. The princess stuff cracks me up because it is full time here too. Good luck on the potty training!

  3. She is such a little doll! Love the spunk and the sass - we seem to have a lot of that around here as well.
